Kaohsiung is a great travel destination in Taiwan

Why Kaohsiung

Don't miss Kaohsiung when traveling to Taiwan. This city at the southern tip of the Formosa Island is one my personal favorites. I especially love the food, people, weather (in the "winter") and the calm of life.

How to get to Kaohsiung

It is easy to get to Kaohsiung from Taipei or other cities on the West Coast (such as Taichung or Tainan), by train or even flying if you don't have lots of time to explore. One of the best natural places in Taiwan is obviously Kenting National Park with beaches and palm trees. Not far from Kaohsiung by bus or train.

What to see in Kaohsiung

Inside the city, famous places to see are night markets with myriad types of fresh seafood and pineapple cakes. Another one of my favorites is the Lotus Pond with impressive pagodas and other Buddhist edifices.

Flying to and from Kaohsiung

There are many flights arriving and departing directly to and from the Kaohsiung International Airport. One can fly to Japan (Tokyo, Osaka and Okinawa), Malaysia, Korea, China, Hong Kong, etc. Tiger Air announced operations to other cities in Japan. Recently there are flights from Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City) to Taichung and hopefully to Kaohsiung soon.

Another way to reach Kaohsiung, or leave it behind, is via the cruise ships that travel to nearby countries. For example Star Cruises company has the SuperStar Virgo cruise ship going to Hong Kong, Manila and back to Kaohsiung.

Kaohsiung is famous for its oyster omelette and oyster pancakes and other many many types of seafood. Restaurants are a good places to try many dishes however I recommend Kaohsiung night markets first. It is easy to try many traditional snacks right in front the foods stalls. Nanhua Night Market is touristy yet famous and brilliantly located centrally near Formosa Boulevard Metro Station.

Which hotel in Kaohsiung

My favorite hotel in Kaohsiung is Centre Hotel. Is mostly the location I love (see photo below) but also the value for money. It kind of feels like an economical type of James Bond hotel. And it's right next to the MRT station. MRT is Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit System or the subway in short.

Hotels in Kaohsiung are mostly of good quality and provide an awesome service. Check out the following affordable hotels in the central area of the city. This selection includes most affordable prices and best ratings:
